Breathprint
"There is a voice that doesn't use words. Listen." ~Rumi
As a child, I loved a chilly fall morning walk to the school bus stop - quiet and dark as I watched leaves dance around my feet. I would exhale deep and long, fogging the air in front of me, letting my breath lead the way. I remember thinking, if only it were possible to capture my breath in a clear glass jar.
I would study and keep the essence of that moment, mysterious and wondrous, like fireflies.
I still cherish a foggy autumn morning. There is stillness and beauty in anticipation of the seasons changing, thick air cloaking so much splendor all around it. It’s such a treat to watch it slowly lift, leaving behind dew on leaves, and showcasing all the rich colors of fall.
In a similar way, your thoughts and feelings can act like a fog. They hang densely in your mind, weaving a narrative about who you are, and eclipsing what your body inherently knows; there is power in the natural rhythm of your breath.
Breath is a somatic portal for accessing the energy body within you.
Breath doesn’t have to be learned. It is its own embodied language and acts independently of your complicity or understanding of it. You carry a signature “breathprint,” an intelligent expression of your being. By focusing on and harnessing this life force, you have the power to transform and heal yourself.
Wonder, magic, and pure bliss are available to you, at any time, by simply letting your mind follow the intuition of your breath.
Now, breathe.
Insight to Action: First, take a normal breath. Next, try a deep breath. Take air in slowly through your nose allowing your belly to fill first and then your chest. When you’re full, breathe out slowly and controlled through your mouth until you feel empty. Repeat four more times, practicing taking in just a little more air each time. This is how you gain breath control.
